"There are two things I've learned from good horses. The first is the importance of heart. You never quit and you never stop getting up. The second is the importance of a good mind. You should never stop learning and never stop looking for new ways to do things. If you stop trying, you lose with horses and with life." ----Ward Witte

Located in Salmon, Idaho, is The Medicine Horse Ranch owned and operated by Ward Witte. Ward was born and raised in Circle, Montana on a 7000 acre ranch and he is no stranger to what is required of a good horse. Because of that knowledge, Ward grew to prefer unregistered Quarter Horse/Thoroughbred crosses. As long as they were big-boned, tall and had good feet and a good ground covering walk. "It's a big country out there, so I want a big horse with good sense," says Ward. "Those horses growing up have influenced my choice of horses as a adult," notes Ward.
Ward settled in the Salmon River Valley in Idaho in 1991 and noted that he had a feeling of peace in this valley. He began looking for the right mares and stallions for his new ranch that he purchased. He wanted large horses with the instinct to work cattle and he decided that he wanted those horses to be colorful. "I got to where I loved the Paints," says Ward. "If you can get the right mind and conformation with color, I don't think you can beat a good Paint."
He has been breeding Paints for over fourteen years now and he produces colorful, athletic, good minded horses. His herd consists of over 100 head of horses now and he has chosen Bitterroot Equine Marketing along with Bluequestfarm.com to represent these fine horses.
In the spring, when foaling and breeding season ends, Ward turns the broodmares and foals out in his mountain pasture and when fall comes, he drives the herd back down closer to the ranch. This drive moves horses through water, over logs, streams and many more obstacles. This makes for a better educated horse when the time comes for starting the young stock. The herd is moved by men and women on horseback and that is the only way that Ward would want it. No modern machinery needed, just lots of good friends.
The Medicine Horse Ranch has three standing stallions: a 1997 gray overo Smoke N Cotton Jr, a 1997 bay homozygous tobiano Cheyenne Party, and the 2003 blue roan Quarter Horse High Driften Frosty. In late winter, the stallions are released with their seperate mare bands for pasture breeding.
Bison are used as training tools for his horses. They are not for teaching the horses to cut, they are there to give them motivation for tracking, turning and stopping according to the rider's cues.
We are proud to represent The Medicine Horse Ranch and look forward to offering many of their horses for sale, from weanlings up to very broke geldings. (some information is from the January issue of the Paint Horse Journal.)

Subject: Tonto/Cowboy Update

I'm so thrilled with my new horse Tonto, who I now call Cowboy! After spending 4 months searching for a second trail horse, I discovered Debbie's website and 2 weeks later found myself owning an amazing 5-year old paint gelding who's met or exceeded every expectation I had! Debbie and I emailed and phoned many times, she always responded professionally and promptly, and we quickly put our faith and trust in each other's honesty, knowledge and abilities. She and her daughters had ridden Cowboy and were very familiar with him, plus she sent me an awesome very professional video before I made the decision to drive the 500 mile round trip to try him out. I was expecting to do some arena work, but she instead took me on an almost 3 hour trail ride in beautiful country and I knew right away I'd found my new horse. Best of all, I always felt she sincerely had my best interests at heart when I told her I was an ol' Montana cowgirl who's ridden all my life, used to show western pleasure with a few dressage lessons thrown in, who now just needed a quiet, dependable trail horse to take good care of me. Debbie and I continue to keep in touch and I've shared her website with many of my friends and students. I urge anyone searching for a quality horse that matches their desires and abilities to contact Debbie Hamilton! She's easy to work with, I trust her knowledge and expertise and besides getting a fabulous horse, I've made a new friend as well!
Thanks Debbie!
